System Of A Down je kalifornijski glazbeni sastav, osnovan 1994 , koji spaja razne vrste glazbe u jednu. Njihova glazba obuhvaća metal, nu metal, hardcore metal, punk rock te armensku narodnu muziku. Ime System of a Down potječe od Darona Malakiana, jednog od članova sastava, koji je napisao stih "Victims of A Down", gdje "A" znači Amerika.

Jedno od obilježja sastava je izražavanje političkih stavova u njihovim pjesmama. Oni često kritiziraju trenutnu američku politiku i medije. Često u pjesmama spominju armenski genocid.

Kada je Steve Harris, mladić plamtećih glazbenih ambicija iza kojega je već bilo nekoliko bendova shvatio, kako jedina mogućnost da radi što želi leži u osnivanju vlastitog benda, rođeni su krajem 1975. Iron Maideni. Nakon što je bend osnovan, uslijedilo je relativno dugo razdoblje formiranja “standardne postave”, u kojem je bend pretrpio mnoge promjene. To je također bilo razdoblje punk revolucije, pa je položaj hard & heavy bendova bio znatno otežan (bilo je teško sklapati ugovore). Usprkos svemu Maideni se “održavaju na životu”, pa tako jedna od postava benda 1978. snima demo, ali originalna snimka biva izbrisana. Jedna kopija demo snimke počinje se “vrtiti” u Bandwagon Pubu u sjevernom Londonu zahvaljujući poznanstvu s tamošnjim DJ-em. S vremenom Maideni počinju i nastupati u tom pubu te im počinje rasti popularnost.

Poslušavši njihov demo, menadžer Rod Smallwood nudi im svoje menadžerske usluge, pa tako uz njegovu pomoć 13. listopada 1978. potpisuju ugovor s diskografskom kućom EMI, odlaze u studio i snimaju kompilaciju pod nazivom “Metal for Muthas”.Krajem 1979. napokon dolazi do formiranja standardne postave koju su činili: Steve Harris - bas/vokal, Dave Murray - gitara, Paul Di’Anno - vokal, Clive Burr - bubnjevi i Dennis Stratton - gitara. U veljači 1980. bend kreće na promotivnu turneju, a prvi singl “Running Free” nadvisuje očekivanja i dospijeva na 44. mjesto UK top-liste, pa se bend pojavljuje i na BBC TV’s “Top of the Pops” i svira uživo (na vlastiti zahtjev). 14. travnja 1980. izdaju svoj prvi album pod nazivom “Iron Maiden”. Album sadrži 8 pjesama i predstavlja fantastično hard rock ostvarenje, pružajući obilje brzih ritmova, brzih gitarskih solo dionica te nevjerojatnu međusobnu usklađenost pojedinih instrumenata. On grupi donosi popularnost širom svijeta, pa su uslijedile UK turneja sa Judas Priestom, samostalna UK turneja, te europska turneja s američkim zvijezdama “KISS”. Nastupaju i u čuvenom londonskom klubu UFO kao posebni gosti.

Nakon turneje s KISS-om, Dennisa Strattona zamjenjuje talentirani gitarist Adrian Smith, a bend u veljači 1981. izdaje album “Killers”. “Maideni” potom kreću na svjetsku turneju i stječu golemu popularnost, izazivajući erupcije oduševljenja širom svijeta. Tako su tri njihova koncerta u Japanu rasprodana za samo 90 minuta, dok u Nizozemskoj publika nije željela napustiti dvoranu nakon njihovog koncerta.

U bendu je zatim uslijedila još jedna promjena: Di’Anna je zamijenio Bruce Dickinson iz grupe “Samson”. Bio je to pjevač fantastičnih glasovnih mogućnosti i glazbenog talenta uopće.

“Maideni” 1982. izdaju album “Number of the Beast” i ulaze u povijest glazbe, postižući savršenstvo. Naime, album je genijalno ostvarenje koje nam pruža sve, od promjene ritmova, fantastične muzikalnosti, gitarskih i bas solo-dionica, do impresivnih vokalnih izvedbi. Grupa njime postiže najveći uspjeh, a album je proglašen remek-djelom i ujedno ponajboljim heavy albumom svih vremena. Godine 1983. iz benda odlazi bubnjar Clive Burr, a na njegovo mjesto dolazi Nicko McBrain, pa je tako oformljena legendarna postava koja je godinama “pokoravala” svijet svojim spektakularnim nastupima i vrhunskim ostvarenjima (Steve Harris - bas; Dave Murray - gitara; Adrian Smith - gitara, Bruce Dickinson - vokal, Nicko McBrain - bubnjevi). Iste godine izdaju album “Piece of Mind”, a zatim su uslijedili: 1984. “Powerslave” (vrhunac Dickinsonove vokalne izvedbe); 1985. live album “Live After Death” ( drugi po prodaji music-video); 1986. "Somewhere in time" 1987. video dokumentarac “Twelve Wasted Years”; 1988. “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son” (epsko remek-djelo).

Godinu 1989. bend je iskoristio za odmor, a početkom 1990. odlazi Adrian Smith, a zamjenjuje ga Janick Gers. U listopadu 1990. izlazi album “No Prayer for the Dying” na kojem se očituje osjetan stvaralački pad (osobito u tekstovima) i postupno zapadanje benda u krizu, no usprkos tome album se, suprotno očekivanjima, našao pri samom vrhu top-lista. Nakon brojnih nastupa širom svijeta, 1992. izdaju znatno bolji album “Fear of the Dark” i osvajaju vrhove mnogih top-lista.

Na veliku žalost svih obožavatelja 1993. iz “Maidena” odlazi legendarni Bruce Dickinson (kako bi se posvetio samostalnim projektima), a na njegovo mjesto dolazi solidni Blaze Bayley.

Zadnji album “The X Factor” izdaju 1995. Taj album predstavlja vrlo dobro ostvarenje te otvara obnovljenom bendu vrata budućnosti.

Njihovoj golemoj popularnosti širom svijeta i ogromnom broju fanova nesumnjivo je pridonijela i maskota-čudovište Eddie kraseći omote gotovo svih diskografskih izdanja, izgrađujući na taj način nešto poput “vječnog imidža” i stvarajući mit zvan Iron Maiden, te što je najbitnije, primamljujući ljude da njihovu ploču primijete, uzmu u ruke i poslušaju.

Svi njihovi albumi zaposjedali su same vrhove svjetskih top-lista, a još se i danas prodaju nesmanjenom žestinom, kao i onoga trenutka kada su izdani. Početkom 80-ih godina uspeli su se na sam vrh popularnosti “paleći” koncertne dvorane širom svijeta, proklamirajući potpuni glazbeni doživljaj, dajući sve od sebe da publiku dovedu do ekstaze, podignu je na noge i uvedu je u stanje pijanstva i to samo pomoću “tvrde” oduševljavajuće glazbe. Tada bivaju od strane neupućenih pojedinaca i zavidnih malih bendova proglašavani za sotoniste što, naravno, nije bila istina. Tih se godina mnogo pisalo i o različitim seksualnim skandalima vezanim uz članove grupe (često se događalo da su se njihovi koncerti pretvarali u prave orgije na kojima su se gledaoci predavali jedni drugima, a da se najčešće nisu uopće poznavali). No ništa nije uspjelo pokolebati njihovo stvaralaštvo i spriječiti ih da obrane heavy metal od nasrtaja punka i učvrste njegov položaj na glazbenoj sceni.

Neosporno je da su “Iron Maiden” edna od najvećih rock grupa svih vremena koja je iza sebe ostavila mnoštvo hitova poput “Hallowed Be Thy Name”, “The Trooper”, “Aces High”, “Powerslave”, “Wasted Years”, “Fear of the Dark”… No, njihovo stvaralaštvo nije jedini kriterij njihove veličine, poznato je da su zarađivali više nego David Bowie i Duran Duran zajedno na vrhuncu njihove popularnosti. Jedan su od rijetkih bendova kojima je pošlo za rukom pridobiti naklonost slušatelja medija, tako da su mediji tvrdili da su “Iron Maiden” gotovo osobno odgovorni za renesansu hard rocka ili heavy metala ranih 1980-ih.

Nakon okončanja vrlo uspješne turneje “The X Factor” bend je izdao kompilaciju pod nazivom “Best of the Beast”. Ovih dana nalaze se u studiju gdje rade na novom albumu čije se izdavanje očekuje u veljači 1998. Potom bi trebala uslijediti svjetska turneja,pa ćemo tako , budemo li imali sreće, “Maidene” vidjeti i čuti uživo i kod nas.

Dok sam išao ulicom gazeći kamenje koje se kotrlja(Rollingstones),ugledah Gilana kako nosi atomskog pijetla(Atomic Rooster).Dok sam išao zamišljen nagazih na dvije žice kroz koje je proticala jednosmjerna i izmjenična struja(AC/DC).Tada sam imao crna stopala(Blackfoot) od velikog napona.Tako šetajuči odoh do rijeke da zavirim u njene purpurne dubine(Deep Purple).Opet svojom nepažnjom sam mogao dobiti po jedan poljubac(Kiss) od Škorpiona i bijele zmije(Scorpions,Whitesnake) koji su bili na obali.Tu na obali rijeke bila su i brača Van Halen,prepirajuči se kakav je to status(Status Quo).Na susjednoj obali Ted Nugent se zabavljao hvatajuči divlje konje(Wild Horses),dok je Mishael Schenker brao tetoviranu ružu(Rose Tatto).Sad već s kišobranom,nastavih šetnju prema zoo vrtu.Prolazeći pokraj škole ugledah Erica Cleptona s nekim školskim djevojkama(Girl School).Ispred zoo vrta stajao je motor sa jakom motornom glavom(Motorhead) a na zidu zoo vrta bila je nacrtana čelična djevica(Iron Maiden).Konačno vidjeh i te tigrove iz Pan Tanga(Tygers of Pan Tang) zbog kojih sam i došao.Kiša prestaje a pojavljuje se duga(Rainbow) a sa dugom i mrak.Stvarno je ovo bila neka crna subota,u stvari crni dan odmora(Black Sabbath).
